The Violence Prevention Centre

The Violence Prevention Centre in Kent continually fights against all forms of violence present in the communities of Southeastern New Brunswick. Currently, the Centre offers a variety of services including individual and group counseling sessions for women, a youth intervention program, a sexual assault intervention and support service, a long-term therapy service for victims of sexual assault, access to resources and various information, training workshops and conferences, as well as referral to the appropriate and needed services.

The integrated services of the Violence Prevention Centre are constantly reassessed to offer clients the best knowledge and practices in terms of intervention. “Countering and eliminating violence in all of its forms” is the idea behind each of the actions implemented by the Violence Prevention Centre’s staff.

The organization has been active for over 20 years and its evolution has been constant since its creation in 1999.

Boreal

The Boreal Child and Youth Expertise Centre, an entity of the Violence Prevention Centre, was founded in Dieppe in October 2017. Boreal offers various services including police intervention, access to social workers from the Department of Social Development, medical-legal assistance, assessments, therapeutic and support services for parents, to name a few. Boreal helps coordinate and facilitate investigations and prosecutions related to sexual assaults against children and adolescents. The center also offers prevention and awareness training.

Boreal is the first, and currently the only, center specializing in sexual violence against children and adolescents in the province of New Brunswick. Boreal serves the Southeastern regions of New Brunswick. Since its inception, Boreal has been an inspiration for the introduction of similar centers of expertise throughout the province as additional resources and care are much needed. The COVID-19 pandemic has also been linked to dramatic increases in sexual violence due to home isolation. Research shows that in times of natural disasters, including pandemics, there is a heightened risk of violence and sexual violence against women and children. Violence and sexual violence prevention centers are overwhelmed across Canada (Sexual Assault Support).
